Implicit Bias:  Taming the Tiger of Unconscious Bias in Hiring

If you have a brain, you have implicit (unconscious) bias.  Implicit bias is not always bad.  Without it, it would be hard for anyone to make all the decisions that need to be made to get through a day.

However, implicit bias also may result in unlawful discrimination.  Further, as a business matter, if you draw conclusions based on implicit bias, you may make bad decisions based on misjudgments.

    This webinar will cover:

    • What is implicit bias
    • The neurological basis for implicit bias
    • Types of implicit bias
    • What factors may make it more likely that implicit bias will occur (such as stress)
    • What factors may make it less likely that implicit bias will occur (such as deliberate rather than reflective decision making)
    • Steps individuals can take to minimize the risk that implicit bias will infect their decision making
    • Systemic approaches to minimizing the risk of implicit bias in the hiring process (for example, blind screening)

Presenter:  Jonathan A. Segal is a partner at Duane Morris LLP in the Employment, Labor, Benefits and Immigration Practice Group. He is also the managing principal of the Duane Morris Institute. The Duane Morris Institute provides training for human resource professionals, in-house counsel, benefits administrators and managers at Duane Morris, at client sites and by way of webinar on myriad employment, labor, benefits and immigration matters.

Previously a litigator, Jonathan’s practice now focuses almost entirely on helping employers meet their business objectives or missions by minimizing legal risk, maximizing compliance and focusing on relationship with business objectives or mission and legal requirements or restrictions.
